The Science of Warm: Our Dietitian-Designed Winter Menu Is Here

Every meal we serve at Papilio Early Learning is intentional. As our 2026 Winter Menu launches across our centres, we want to share not just what's on the menu, but why every ingredient, every dish, and every bite has been chosen with care. This is nutrition grounded in evidence, prepared fresh each day, and designed to support the whole child through the cooler months ahead.

Designed by Accredited Practising Dietitians

Our winter menu has been developed in collaboration with The Biting Truth, Anna Debenham and Alex Parker, Accredited Practising Dietitians with over a decade of experience in early childhood nutrition. Working alongside our national food partner Woolworths at Work, they have built a four-week rotating menu that meets all relevant nutritional guidelines for children aged two to five, including the Australian Dietary Guidelines, ACECQA requirements, Munch and Move, the Caring for Children Manual, and Menu Planning Guidelines for long day care.

This isn't a menu designed around convenience. It's designed around children - their developmental stage, their nutrient needs, and the kind of food experiences that build lifelong healthy habits.

Why Winter Nutrition Deserves Close Attention

Cold weather brings with it a natural increase in illness. But the connection between diet and immune function in young children is more nuanced than simply adding vitamin C. A well-nourished child is one whose whole body is supported, gut microbiome, iron stores, zinc levels, and energy balance all play a role in how effectively children resist and recover from illness.

Our winter menu is built around this understanding. Warm main meals at lunchtime prioritise iron-rich proteins - beef, pork, chicken, and legumes - alongside complex carbohydrates for sustained energy and a broad range of vegetables for fibre, antioxidants, and colour. The four-week rotation ensures children encounter a wide variety of nutrients across the season, not just the same safe favourites.

Freshly prepared onsite at each Papilio centre, every meal reaches children at its nutritional peak - vitamins and minerals intact, flavours at their best.

What's on the Menu

Here's a selection of what children will enjoy across the winter rotation:

  • Vietnamese Beef and Bean Stew with white rice - iron-rich, warming, and gently spiced with lemongrass and Chinese five spice
  • Mexican Cheesy Beef and Rice Casserole - protein and fibre in one hearty dish, with a three-bean vegetarian alternative
  • Minestrone Soup with Bread Soldiers - a vegetable-forward classic packed with cannellini beans, kidney beans, and risoni
  • Garlic Chicken Veggie Stir Fry with Brown Rice - lean protein with green beans, baby corn, and capsicum
  • Italian Pork Mince and Veggie Pasta Bake - a family-style bake with lentils, zucchini, and macaroni

Snack times are equally considered. Morning teas such as Beans and Toast with Fruit Salad provide fibre and slow-release energy for the morning ahead, while afternoon teas like Rice Cakes with Avocado Dip and Crunchy Apple pair healthy fats with natural sweetness.

Every lunch includes a vegetarian alternative, using tofu, legumes, and lentils to ensure iron and protein needs are met regardless of dietary preference. Halal options are available on request - please speak with your Centre Manager.

Try It at Home: Garlic Chicken and Vegetable Stir-Fry with Brown Rice

Inspired by one of this season's most popular lunch dishes, here's a home-friendly version of our Garlic Chicken Veggie Stir-Fry - quick, colourful, and full of the nutrients children need.

Serves: 4

Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 500g chicken breast, sliced thinly
  • 1½ cups brown rice, rinsed
  • 150g green beans, trimmed and halved
  • 1 red capsicum, sliced
  • 1 x 225g tin baby corn, drained
  • 3 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sweet chilli sauce
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons water

Method

  1. Cook brown rice according to packet instructions. Set aside and keep warm.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large wok or frying pan over high heat. Add chicken and cook for 5-6 minutes, stirring, until golden and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same pan, add garlic and stir for 30 seconds. Add green beans, capsicum, and baby corn. Stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until just tender.
  4. Return chicken to the pan. Add hoisin sauce, sweet chilli sauce, and water. Toss everything together and cook for 1-2 minutes until well coated and heated through.
  5. Serve over brown rice.

Tip: Swap chicken for firm tofu for an equally nourishing vegetarian version. Press the tofu well before cooking for the best texture.
