At Papilio, we know that the most powerful learning experiences don't happen by accident. They're crafted, intentionally, thoughtfully, by educators who understand what children need. National Simultaneous Storytime is one of those moments: a national event with deep educational purpose, and an opportunity for early childhood educators to do what they do best.
Australia's Biggest Read-Aloud
National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) and is now in its 26th year. At 12pm AEST on 27 May 2026, millions of children across Australia, in early learning centres, schools, libraries, and homes, heard the same story read aloud at exactly the same moment. The event exists to promote the value of reading, literacy, and shared storytelling in children's lives.
This year's chosen book was Luna Roo the Kangaroo Baller, written by Adam Jackson and Adrian Lloyd, illustrated by Jake Minton, and published by Little Book Press. Selected from 84 publisher submissions, the book tells the story of Luna Roo, the rookie captain of FC Outback, as she steps up to lead her team through a high-stakes match against Bush United. It's a story about navigating nerves, trusting your skills, and drawing strength from the people around you.
Why This Book, and Why It Works
The selection of Luna Roo for NSS 2026 was deliberate. ALIA chose it because it captures something universal - the experience of facing a challenge with courage, even when you're not sure you're ready. That's a theme that resonates deeply with young children, who face their own moments of uncertainty every day.
The book's authors bring genuine expertise to the page. Adam Jackson has worked at the highest levels of professional football, including at Manchester United, and is currently Head of Marketing at global sports broadcaster beIN SPORTS. Adrian Lloyd is an FA-qualified coach who has coached at Fulham FC and with children's and adult teams across Australia. Their combined experience gives the story a sense of authenticity that children respond to, even if they couldn't articulate why.
For educators, Luna Roo also offers rich opportunities for intentional teaching. The themes of self-belief, emotional regulation, and teamwork align naturally with the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), particularly the outcomes around children's sense of identity, wellbeing, and connection to community.
How Papilio Centres Brought It to Life
Our educators at Papilio and the broader Affinity Education network of centres approached NSS as more than a storytime, it was a platform for extended, purposeful learning.
Soccer-themed sensory trays gave children a tactile entry point into the world of the book, inviting exploration and conversation before and after the reading. Soccer-inspired physical activities connected the story's themes to movement and gross motor development. And foyer displays created a bridge between the centre and home, giving families a window into what their children had experienced and thought about during the day.
The Research Behind Shared Reading
The educational case for reading aloud to young children is well established. Shared reading supports emergent literacy, language development, vocabulary acquisition, listening comprehension, and phonological awareness. A review of 29 studies found significant positive effects for read-aloud interventions across all of these domains, particularly for children at risk of reading difficulties.
Beyond the academic outcomes, reading aloud builds the kind of warm, attentive relationship between educator and child that quality early learning depends on. When a child experiences story as something shared, something that sparks curiosity, laughter, and conversation, they develop a relationship with books and learning that stays with them.
National Simultaneous Storytime honours all of that. And for Papilio families, it's a reminder that the learning happening in our centres is connected to something much larger: a national commitment to the power of stories in children's lives.
