The Future Starts With Us: Recognising the Expertise Behind Every Day

On Wednesday 2 September, Australia observes Early Childhood Educators' Day(opens in new tab), recognising the professionals who guide our youngest learners through some of the most formative years of their lives. This year's theme, The Future Starts With Us, speaks to the responsibility, and the privilege, that comes with that role. It's been a demanding year for the early education sector in Australia, and today is a chance to recognise the professionals who've continued to show up for children and families throughout it.

At Papilio, we hold our educators to a high professional standard, and every day they meet it. But qualifications are only ever the starting point. What sets exceptional early childhood education apart is what educators do with that expertise: the considered observations behind a program, the intentional decisions made in a single interaction, the professional judgement that knows when to step in and when to step back.

Practice, applied with care

Early learning is a genuine profession, built on evidence-based practice, and our educators apply it with a level of care that's harder to formalise. It's in the way a learning story captures not just what a child did, but why it mattered. It's in the relationships built with families, grounded in trust and open communication. It's in the quiet consistency that lets a child feel safe enough to take a learning risk.

This is the standard of excellence we're proud to celebrate. That dedication and professionalism is what turns curiosity into confidence, and confidence into genuine growth.

Expertise that keeps growing

Our educators' learning doesn't stop once they're qualified. Through the Lifelong Learning Curriculum and ongoing professional development, Papilio educators keep building on their practice year after year, refining how they observe, how they plan, how they respond to each child's stage of development. It's this combination of formal training and continuous, applied learning that shapes the standard of care and education a Papilio classroom delivers. Families notice it not as a credential, but as consistency: a program that's genuinely considered, not improvised.

We'd love to hear from you

If a Papilio educator has shaped your child's learning journey, we'd welcome you to share a few words about their impact directly with your centre - you don't need to post it on social media for it to be meaningful, and your reflections help us recognise the professional excellence happening in our services every day.

Affinity Education's CEO, Glen Hurley, shared a message for Educators' Day this year - read it here.

To our educators: thank you for the expertise, the intention and the care you bring to your practice. If their work has ever inspired you to consider a career in the profession, you can explore opportunities on our Careers page.

And if you're looking for a centre near you, you can find one here.

The future starts with you.

Early Childhood Educators' Day is a national initiative of the Australian Childcare Alliance, held on the first Wednesday of September each year.
